Discharge Instructions for Patients Having Neck Surgery

ACTIVITY AND NECK BRACE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Unless otherwise instructed, if you have a soft collar, wear it as much as possible for the first 3-5 days. After that period, wean yourself from the collar over 1-2 days.
  • If you have a semi-hard collar (ASPEN, DeRoyal), wear it at all times including while sleeping, showering, or eating. After showering, change the pads and allow the wet pads to air dry.
  •  Avoid strenuous activity such as lifting, pulling, or pushing. Avoid any activities that involve straining your neck for a lengthly time, such as looking down to read a book or working a crossword puzzle.
  • Try to maintain a balanced position of your head and neck, especially when changing from sitting to standing, etc. You may sleep in any comfortable position.
  • Gradually increase your activities and let your comfort be your guide. Walking is good exericse.
  • Avoid running, jogging, or bicycle riding.
  • You can expect a certain degree of discomfort and stiffness in the neck and shoulders, which should gradually improve.
  • Sexual relations may be resumed at your discretion.

WOUND INSTRUCTIONS

  • If your incision has Steri-Strips, you may get the incision wet 3-5 days after surgery. At that time, the Steri-Strips can be carefully removed.
  • If you have stitches that can be seen, avoid soaking the incision. You may shower if you cover the incision with plastic wrap and tape.

MEDICATION INSTRUCTIONS

  • At the time of your discharge, you will be given a prescription for pain medication. When this runs out, please contact our office for refill instructions. Please note: We remember that we do not take prescription calls on Fridays, weekends, or holidays.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WHEN TO CALL

  • Please call our office if you develop the following: (Office hours Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30 p.m., phone 423-578-1518).
  • Fever (over 100 degrees), chills or sweats.
  • Drainage from your incision. (A small amount of puffiness and numbness around the area of the incision is normal).
  • New pain or weakness beginning after you leave the hospital.
  • New bowel or bladder difficulty.
  • Excessive swelling, or difficulty breathing and swallowing.
  • You will be given an appointment for your next visit at hospital discharge.

In case of an emergency after business hours, please contact our answering service by calling 423-578-1518 and they will direct your questions to the physician on call OR go to the nearest emergency room.
