Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
DDD occurs in many people during the normal aging process. It is sometimes
referred to as arthritis of the back. DDD is usually due to normal changes in the
disc (cushion between the bones) as a person ages. It can occasionally be caused
by injury or repetitive lifting. Smoking, obesity, and hereditary factors also lead
to advanced degeneration. DDD can cause lower back pain. Symptoms usually
resolve on their own; occasionally, medications and non-operative treatments
(physical therapy) are needed. Surgery is performed for those who do not improve. |
